Mexican Rey Vargas and Yorkshireman Gavin McDonnell fight on February 25 at Hull Ice Arena in England, for the vacant WBC super bantamweight crown, in a promotion of Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.
Vargas (28-0, 22 KO’s) and former European Champion McDonnell (16-0-2, 4 KOs) will clash for the coveted WBC green and gold. The title was vacated by Hozumi Hasegawa of Japan after announcing his retirement.
Also on the card, Britain’s Luke Campbell (15-1, 12 KO), a 2012 Olympic gold medalist, will defend his silver lightweight belt against Mexican Jairo “Doberman” López (21-6, 14 KO), a colleague of Vargas .
Campbell has won three straight fights since his 12-round split decision loss over Yvan Mendy in December 2012. López has also won three straight bouts after three straight losses.
In order to protect the health of all fighters, plus graduated weight loss, the WBC through William Boodhoo, coordinates pre weigh ins and thorough medical examinations.
