Stephen Espinoza believes fans could be in for a spectacular collision when welterweight champions Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman trade blows on March 4 at the Barclays Center.
The Showtime Executive and General Manager firmly sees the two protagonists as the top two in their division as Garcia and Thurman bid to unify at 147 pounds and claim the coveted number one spot.
“This is truly an event that doesn’t need to be sold. I am here to share that this fight will be the second installment of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on CBS. The obvious question is why? It’s because this fight merits it. As we saw (with DeGale v Jack), when the best fight the best, the results are often spectacular,” said Espinoza.
“It’s not a surprise that we get impressive results when elite fighters take on other elite fighters. Special things happen. New fans are created and rivalries are born.
“Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman are the two best welterweights in the world. End of story.
“They will fight on March 4, it will be a huge audience here at Barclays and on CBS and it will be a special night,” he added.
Garcia and Thurman are both undefeated, highly-though of and bidding to follow former pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather in holding two of the welterweight belts at the same time.
Thurman begins the favorite, possibly due to his superior punching power, although Garcia has proven his skills prior to what is seen as a real boxer versus puncher match-up in New York.
