Eduard Gutknecht undergoes surgery following Wembley Arena collapse

The Kazakh-born German collapsed in the dressing room on Friday night in the aftermath of losing a one-sided super-middleweight contest at Wembley Arena.

‘Energy Eddy’ took considerable punishment over the 36 minutes but looked fine until things took a turn for the worse backstage.

Opponent Groves issued a statement following the events after cancelling a post-fight press conference due to Gutknecht’s condition.

“Out of respect to Eduard Gutknecht and his family’s privacy I don’t want to say too much but we were all deeply concerned to hear that he was taken to hospital after the fight last night.

“I sincerely hope it is nothing too serious and I would like to send out all of my support and best wishes to him and his family and this difficult time,” stated Groves.

Gutknecht collapsed before ‘needing to be resuscitated in the ambulance’ on the way to receiving care for his condition, although nothing official has been released by promoters Sauerland regarding his current status.

Gutknecht, 34, was beaten convincingly despite showing tons of heart in what was his 36th professional contest. Groves won the fight 119-109 on two cards with the other reading 119-110.
