In the wake of BoxNation’s recent collaboration with broadcaster BT Sport, promoter Steve Wood has detailed more exciting news for fight fans, revealing that a number of VIP Promotions’ shows will be broadcast live in 2017 on the Fight Life TV Channel (Freeview 91 and Sky 468).
Wood has teamed up with combat sports company Tanko, and will be airing shows from Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse on the Fight Life Channel, which currently broadcasts other contact sports including Muay Thai and MMA.
As a forerunner to the official New Year launch, VIP Promotions’ upcoming shows this Friday and Saturday (November 18 and 19) at Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse are both being filmed, to be shown via delayed coverage on the Fight Life Channel.
“This is great news for boxing fans, on top of the good news about BT Sport getting involved,” explained Wood. “Fans will now have another channel to watch boxing, and it will be free and good quality. VIP shows are up there with the standard of shows that TV companies want. We’re not a small hall promoter anymore, we’re getting up there with the biggest UK promoters.
“So next year, we’ll be doing joint promotions with Tanko and Red Star Boxing, with the shows being shown live on Fight Life. There will be a minimum of four Victoria Warehouse shows, and we’re discussing potential others. There’ll also be documentary type programmes on VIP fighters, to help build their profile.
“The shows this Friday and Saturday are being filmed and will be shown at a later date, which we’ll confirm soon. Both are decent cards. Friday is a nine-fight card; Ryan Doyle will be moving to super-featherweight for the first time, and we’ve got a solid undercard including Kofi Yates and Jordan Thompson.
“Saturday’s headliner between Matty Askin and Tommy McCarthy is a super fight. It’s genuine 50-50; you can argue a case for either of them. It’s a trade fight that I’m really looking forward to. It will be a long night with 14 fights, but it’ll be worth everyone staying awake for the last one! I genuinely can’t pick a winner, it could be Askin in the first six rounds, or maybe McCarthy to win later on.”
“We’re really excited to be working with Steve,” said Fight Life TV’s Jamie Alaise. “He’s got a track record for spotting talent and helping that talent grow, which is what we want to highlight. We want to show what talent the UK has, help them get more of the spotlight, and Steve’s amazing at nurturing fighters and getting them up to that higher level. So it’s great to work with someone like Steve, who’s ethically correct.”
