Barry, Wales native Andrew ‘AC Superstar’ Selby has made an impressive impact since turning pro last year. Former world number one ranked amateur Selby has already picked up the vacant British flyweight crown earlier this year when comprehensively beat Leicestershire’s Louis Norman by a wide points decision at Cardiff’s Ice Arena Wales.
Last time out Selby beat Nicaragua’s durable Felix Moncada by way of a fifth-round stoppage on the undercard to Josh Taylor’s spectacular Commonwealth super lightweight title victory over Dave Ryan at the Meadowbank Arena on October 21.
The super talented Selby, 6(4) – 0, has taken to the pro game like a duck to water but on November 18 at the SSE Arena, Wembley he faces by far his toughest test to date as a professional when he takes on the Philippines Jake Bornea for the vacant IBF Inter Continental flyweight title. This clash of top prospects will act as the support bout George Groves’ WBA International super middleweight title defence against Germany’s two-time world title challenger Eduard Gutknecht.
Currently ranked number 15 with the WBO, Jake ‘D-Twins’ Bornea, 11(5) – 1 – 1, comes from a fighting family, with his brother Jade also a prospect back in their native Philippines. The twenty-one year old Bornea hails from General Santos City, also the home of superstar Manny Pacquiao. Like the ‘Pacman’, Bornea wants to go on to become world flyweight champion and if he is to achieve this goal he must surely beat the undefeated Selby on November 18.
This exciting IBF Inter-Continental flyweight title fight has all the ingredients needed to be an explosive affair. Both men are ranked in the top 15 of the world with the IBF and WBO respectively and both have aspirations of becoming world champion. The fans at the SSE Arena, Wembley are in for a real treat on Friday November 18.
ANDREW SELBY: “It’s great to be back in action so soon after my win in Edinburgh on Channel 5. The fans response from that win was amazing and I can’t wait to put on another big performance in London.
“Jake Bornea is another step up in class as he’s ranked in the world’s top 15. I don’t know too much about him but I know there’s great talent in the flyweights from the Philippines so I will be ready.”
JAKE BORNEA: “I’m so excited for this opportunity. To box in London on a massive show is a dream come true for me. I’m already in the top 15 in the world with the WBO and once I beat Selby on November 18, I will also be in the IBF’s top 15.
“Selby is a great boxer but he hasn’t been in with anybody like me in his life. This isn’t amateur boxing, where he was king, this is top level professional boxing and I will expose him on November 18.
“I’m coming to London to win that IBF Inter-Continental belt on November 18 and do my great nation proud.”
BARRY MCGUIGAN: “Selby vs Bornea is a world class flyweight contest. Andrew Selby has shown glimpses of his potential already this year but on November 18 he will have to be at his very best if he’s to win that IBF Inter-Continental belt.
‘’We all know that the Philippines have produced some of the finest little men in boxing over the years and Jake Bornea looks like another excellent boxer from those parts. This is a fantastic fight for Andrew at this stage of his career and one that we’re all confident he can win and win in style.
“The bill for November 18 at the SSE Arena, Wembley now features three top level title fights as well as a cracking British welterweight title eliminator between Paddy Gallagher and Tamuka Mucha. It promises to be an outstanding evening of world class professional boxing.”
CHRIS SANIGAR: “I’m delighted with the way Andrew has developed into the pro game, it’s no guarantee that just because you’re a standout amateur it will be the same in the pros.
“He’s learning all the time and Jake Bornea is another tough test. Andrew needs experience against boxers from Asia and South America as all the World Champions are from these regions.”
Doors will open at 5pm at the SSE Arena, Wembley on Friday November 18, with boxing starting at 5.30pm.
