Dave Coldwell has put the finishing coat on another Tony Bellew training camp and is confident that his world class charge can overcome the threat of American veteran, BJ Flores, on Saturday night at the Liverpool Echo Arena.
Bellew’s maiden defence of the crown he acquired back in May with a chilling knockout of Ilungu Makabu is a battle that has seen plenty of talk from both combatants and Coldwell is adamant that Bellew will back his boasts and deliver another impressive performance.
“It’s here now and it’s good to have Tony back in the ring defending his belt,” said Coldwell. “Tony worked so hard to get that belt and he’s got to work even harder to keep it now because every single person at Cruiserweight wants what he has and that’s the world title.
“The scenario surrounding his win was like a fairytale but I know he’s capable of achieving so much more because the talent and work ethic he possesses are really something else. There’s so many big fights out there for him against big names so he’s got to keep his focus on the current challenge and that’s BJ Flores. He’s a potential banana skin but if Tony performs to the standard I know he’s capable of then he’ll be victorious.”
Coldwell added, “Flores might not be a household name but he’s a wise old fighter who knows a trick or two and he’s someone that’s got our full respect. He’s been around a long time and he’s seen quite a lot so we have to be switched on from the opening bell in this one.
“Tony has done everything asked of him in this camp. He’s sparred really well and he’s in a good place. If he goes out there and sticks to what he’s very good at then I think he gives Flores something he’s never had to deal with before and that will play into our hands as the fight goes on.”
