Floyd Mayweather’s 50th: Canelo II on Cinco de Mayo the perfect return

At just 26 years of age, two-weight world champion Canelo participated in his 50th professional contest and now has 48 wins and a draw against his solitary loss versus Floyd Mayweather back in September 2013.

The gambling and boxing capital of the world has hosted many big fights over the years, but if you can’t make it to the action to the fights and the odds, head to Magical Las Vegas Casino to try your luck online instead.

A hand injury is set to keep the Mexican superstar out for the rest of the year regarding Canelo. With a promised September 2017 showdown with Gennady Golovkin looming, the 154-pound titlist has maybe one or spots open before a permanent move to 160 pounds.

The Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo will already be pencilled in by Golden Boy Promotions for the spring, meaning May 6 next year is a big date on the calendar for Canelo fans. The calibre of the opponent could see the Jalisco fighter take a warm-up earlier in the year, but May looks set to be a blockbuster night for Canelo.

Cinco de Mayo could well be the last opportunity anybody has to face Canelo lower than the middleweight limit, so could ex-pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. be lured out of retirement to battle his old rival one more time?

Canelo somehow was handed a majority decision the last time they met despite Mayweather bamboozling a young and green Alvarez, but there can be no disputing his improvement since then.

Many believe that Mayweather’s age and Canelo’s newly-gathered experience would make any return a much closer affair and be a lot more appealing than a rumoured second fight for ‘Money’ against Manny Pacquiao.

‘MayPac II’ would face a massive backlash from punters who forked out for the first bout and felt short-changed as the pair laboured through twelve uneventful rounds at the MGM Grand.

If Mayweather were to aim for a 50th win, though, only Canelo, or possibly Golovkin, would generate the interest necessary to allow the currently retired five-weight world champion to claim another massive payday without controversy.

Floyd has never entertained a fight between Mayweather and Golovkin, so it would leave Canelo and Pacquiao the only real options barring a shock move to MMA to face Conor McGregor in a cross-code encounter.
