Former world champion and British legend Ricky Hatton has been urging the boxing community to dig deep for the family of tragic fighter Mike Towell.
‘Iron’ Mike passed away on Friday following a fifth round defeat to Dale Evans in Glasgow leaving behind a girlfriend and young son, Rocco.
Hatton asked fans on social media whether anybody had launched a fundraising page for the family but decided to take things into his own hands in a bid to raise £20,000 for Mike’s loved ones.
Within five hours, the donations reached £15,000 of the total Hatton had hoped to ‘smash’ in aid of Towell.
‘The Hitman’ started things off himself by donating £5000 and put out a message to boxing’s big names will do similar to help those affected by the loss of Towell, who was just 25 years old.
The boxing world has been rocked once by the death of a young man who lived for the sport and was taken in the most hurtful of circumstances.
Opponent Evans is also said to be devasted by what transpired after the pair traded blows at St. Andrews Sporting Club on Thursday night.
