CBC: Denton Daley, Sarah Pucek win vacant titles in Canada

CBC 14/09/2016

The first Commonwealth Championships to take place in Canada since Troy Ross won his Cruiserweight Title in Montreal in 2007, took place in Vancouver and Ontario, last Friday night, 9th September.

In a historic first for the Commonwealth Championships, which have been around since the late 19th Century (then known as ‘Empire’ Championships) the first Women’s Title was boxed for, when SARAH PUCEK, a UK citizen but Canadian resident defeated LUCIA LARCINESE of Canada on points for the vacant Featherweight Championship in a contest was excellent, worthy and hard fought.

Sarah is now looking for a quick defence either in Canada or the UK, or possibly against one of the many Commonwealth women who compete in the USA.

Meanwhile in Toronto on the same night, DENTON DALEY defeated fellow Canadian, SYLVERA LOUIS for the vacant Cruiserweight Title, nine years after Troy Ross won the same Title and nineteen years after Billy Irwin lost his Lightweight Title to David Tetteh, the last Commonwealth Championship to take place in that city.

The contest was refereed by former excellent Commonwealth Welterweight Champion, DONOVAN BOUCHER and promoted by Global Legacy Boxing, a partner in which is former World and Commonwealth Heavyweight Champion, LENNOX LEWIS.
