Dunbartonshire’s Martin Harkin has made the jump from the amateurs into the professional ranks and is now deep in preparation for his professional debut on September 29 at Glasgow’s Radisson Hotel; a bout that will be showcased live on STV.

The Harkin family have a history at the St Andrew’s Sporting Club, with his father Robert having boxed on the St Andrew’s Sporting Club in the late 80’s. Harkin Snr boxed for both the British and Commonwealth title and after a stellar amateur career, the younger Harkin is looking to emulate and better his father’s success.

“It’s brilliant that I’m following in my father’s footsteps and boxing on the St Andrew’s Sporting Club. My Dad has had a lot of experience as a professional and I’m lucky to be able to great advice whenever it is needed.”

“I’ve had a lot of amateur experience and my trainers and I thought it was the right time to turn professional.”

“I’ve got top class management and coaches in Danny Lee from Greenock who trained John Simpson, Grant Mcauley from Paisley and of course my management Iain Wilson and Colin Bellshaw who I’m confident will get me the right fights at the right time.”

The bill that is topped by Dundee’s Mike Towell contesting a final eliminator for the British Welterweight Crown against Welshman Dale Evans is set to be one of the best fights Scottish fight fans will be treated too in a long time and the former amateur standout Harkin is excited for his moment in the limelight.

“I’m really grateful to my management for giving me the opportunity to make my professional debut live on STV and on such a top class show.”

“I’m looking to take one fight at a time and I’m looking to build my name in my local area of Dumbarton and all over Scotland and then go from there.”

“Fans can expect an exciting fight from myself, I feel like I have an explosive style and a style that the fans will enjoy.”

Tickets for Martin Harkin’s debut on a bill that also features the Inverclyde duo of Sam Ball and Grant Quigley as well as Mike Towell’s Final Eliminator for the British title are available from all boxers on the bill or via www.standrewssportingclub.com
