Exclusive: There’s no comparing Liam Smith and Amir Khan – Canelo

One devastating blow took care of Khan at the T-Mobile Arena but Canelo says the only comparison you can make between Khan and upcoming foe Liam Smith is the two fighters hailing from the UK.

“Amir Khan and Liam Smith have completely different styles,” Canelo exclusively told World Boxing News.

“My fight plan is also different but what is the same is my respect for both Smith and Khan. They are both great fighters in their own right and a credit to their country.”

Asked about his move back down to 154 and returning to Texas for the first time since May 2015, Canelo added: “I have been fighting at 155 so why not move down one pound?

“It’s a good challenge as Smith is aggressive and I’m aggressive. We both come forward so it will make an entertaining fight for the fans.

“I love to fight in Texas. It’s like a second home to me and I’ve had good success in Houston and San Antonio.

“September 17 in Dallas should top the 30 and 40,000 people we drew in those two cities so I’m really looking forward it,” said Canelo.

The 26 year-old continues to be linked to a move up to 160 pounds for a meeting with either Gennady Golovkin or Billy Joe Saunders in the future but has a tough job on his hands first against a fighter approaching the prime of his career.

Smith has been in knockout form in taking his C.V to 23-0-1 and has the opportunity to open a mass of doors Stateside should he be able to pull off a shock at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
