Exclusive: Saunders says Eubank Sr. lives off his son, talks return

Middleweight world champion Billy Joe Saunders has responded to recent call-outs on social media from former opponent Chris Eubank Jr’s father, Chris Sr.

Senior has been drumming up support for a potential rematch between his son and Saunders following the collapse of a fight with current 160-pound king Gennady Golovkin in September.

‘GGG’ opted to face Kell Brook as Eubank Sr. stalled over signing the contract. Saunders is seemingly the next target for Junior to earn himself a chance at last remaining ruler at the weight.

No Saunders vs Eubank II

As Eubank added more posts to his Twitter account following a barrage on Monday, Saunders contacted WBN to give his side of how things currently stand.

“There’s no Saunders vs Eubank rematch currently in talks, so what’s the point going on about this fight,” Saunders told World Boxing News exclusively.

“I’m looking for bigger fights where I’m going to earn millions of pounds. Fighting him makes money, but he’s got to earn his shot and his stripes and don’t keep turning down world title fights.

“Perhaps if he wins a world title, this fight could hopefully be as big as the Froch vs Groves fight one day.”

Eubank Sr.

Asked about Eubank Jr’s father constantly mentioning him on social media, Saunders was getting tired of hearing the constant mentions by the 1990s icon.

“Eubank keeps saying things and putting on social media about the rematch being there to help my career.

“But I’m middleweight champion in the world and his son’s two fights away from keeping his British title, something I won two years ago,” he pointed out.

“They’re s***-talkers, and people believe their s*** to sell stories. The reality is he’s not even a European champion, and he’s being offered million-pound fights, plus turning them down.

“Other British level fighters wouldn’t turn down that sort of money because it’s life-changing, and he shouldn’t be doing it.

“Eubank Sr. has already cost Jr. a few million quid. If that were my dad, I’d tell him to step back.

“My dad would never get involved in my financial business. I’ve got his support and backing, but he doesn’t look to earn anything from me.

“I think Eubank Sr. looks to earn from Jr because he’s blown all his dough. That’s a fact. He’s got no money himself, so he’s earning off his son.

“I think his son needs to man up and take some decisions himself.”

Return to the ring

Turning his attention to when he expects to return to action after rejecting the opportunity to fight on the Canelo vs Smith bill in Texas, Saunders revealed his next fight date would be made public imminently.

“I’m out in October on a bill to be announced this week. We’ve just got to finalize and tie up this opponent. Then I’ll be out again in December,” Saunders explained.

“In December, I’m looking for a big one. Hopefully, we could get Golovkin or slip in some other big names.

“If it’s Golovkin, it will be in England, but we wouldn’t mind going to America for Canelo.

“The December one is certainly going to be a big name,” he added.
