Birmingham’s Gamal Yafai and Frankie Gavin triumph in Leeds

WBN 30/07/2016

Birmingham’s Gamal Yafai successfully defended the Commonwealth super bantamweight title but was made to work for it by tough battler Josh Wale.

The pair traded blows right up until the final bell, although the superior boxing ability of the champion was evident and Yafai eventually came out on top.

Scores of 118-111 and 117-112 (twice) told the story of the fight as Yafai push his career tally into double figures. Wale drops a ninth loss in what was his 31st pro contest.

Frankie Gavin is back in the win column following a 14-month spell out of the ring. The southpaw had been out of action since losing to Kell Brook in his first world title challenge and made it 23 wins to his credit by halting Ivo Gogosevic.

Gavin was on top throughout the contest, although the Croatian entertained the crowd until his inevitable defeat in the sixth.
