Sky’s Adam Smith: Golovkin v Brook ‘an astonishing twist’

Golovkin, 34, faces 30 year-old Brook for all the middleweight marbles at London’s O2 Arena in a contest that has both shocked and delighted the masses since being confirmed by Eddie Hearn on Friday.

Smith, who works closely with Hearn, expects Golovkin v Brook to live up to all expectations on September 10 as Matchroom Sport bring one of the world’s greatest fighters to the UK.

“What a massive announcement! It’s the kind of an astonishing twist that can only happen in our sport,” said Smith.

“Britain’s longest reigning unbeaten fighter and world welterweight champion Kell Brook moves up to challenge Gennady Golovkin who brings his world middleweight titles to our shores.

“With 71 wins between them, 57 by knockout and no defeats, it’s a wonderful clash and a huge opportunity for Sheffield’s ‘Special One’.

“It promises to be another great night on Sky Sports Box Office,” he added.

A massive undercard featuring more world title fights has been promised by Hearn in the coming weeks as Britain bares the fruits of being the leading nation in the sport with a total of 13 world title holders.
