‘Being WBC champion makes Bellew a top target,’ says Coldwell

Just a few weeks on from his “greatest night in boxing,” Dave Coldwell is preparing to open his doors for Tony Bellew’s latest camp as the WBC Cruiserweight world champion sharpens his tools ahead of his first defence.

With Bellew occupying an envious position in one of the game’s most dangerous divisions, the queue to face “Bomber” will be a lengthy and dangerous one and Coldwell insists that they’ll be training like challengers to ensure the belt stays around Bellew’s waist.

“The hard work begins again for Tony,” declared Coldwell. “If he thought the path to getting the world title was a tough one then he’s going to find out how harder things can get because he basically has a target on his back now. He’s WBC world champion and that means that every single person in the division wants what he’s got and he’s going to have to step it up again to keep what he’s worked so hard for. Being world champion is something he’s dreamed of every night for many years and I’m expecting him to fight to keep it with everything that he’s got inside him.”

Coldwell added, “We’re going to be looking at a maiden defence early into the new season and there’s a few guys who have been mentioned but there’s still some decisions still to be made by the WBC.

Goodison Park on the Bank Holiday Sunday was so good in so many ways for so many people but Tony needs to use that as a platform to push on and become a dominant champion and a consistent world class performer.

I’m over the moon with his recent performances and he can’t let this momentum he has going for him slip. It’s going to be great having him back in the gym and I can’t wait to start plotting the next move for him. These are really brilliant times for him.”
