Joshua Burke happy to be fighting closer to home on July 9

UKO Boxing 17/06/2016

Joshua Burke is looking forward to fighting closer to home when he appears on Black Country Boxing ‘Summer Scorcher’ at Walsall Town Hall next month.

The Wolverhampton cruiserweight recorded a debut win in Birmingham last year before slipping to a narrow points loss against former amateur nemesis, Courtney Richards, in Plymouth in January.

Now though, the 30 year-old is looking forward to being the home fighter as he steps up preparations ahead of his third pro outing on Saturday, 9th July.

“It’s nice to get a home billing,” Burke told www.uko-boxing.com. “Birmingham was a local fight but I was still the away fighter and then I had the long trip down to Plymouth to take on Courtney.

“I won in Birmingham and although I lost on points in Plymouth; a lot of people, myself included, thought I did enough to win. Now, being the home fighter, it’s a good chance for my fans to come along and see me in action.

“It is something I’m looking forward to. I don’t mind being an away fighter, I’m the kind of fighter who will fight anyone; anywhere but it’s always nice to fight in front of your own fans. I did it a lot in the amateurs so I’m looking forward to doing it in the pro’s.

“I had 18 amateur fights and built up a decent following so this will be the first time they’ve been able to see me on a home show in the paid ranks. A lot of my stable-mates – Lennox Clarke, Lee Glover, Tom Stokes and Luke Heron (Walker) – are on the bill too so the gym is buzzing at the minute.

“I started sparring last week and have done some work with Shane Dragonslayer, who is my weight and from the same gym, but I’ve also been in with Ricky Summers who fights the week after me and travelled down to Coventry to spar with Dilly Singh, so I’m getting the rounds in.

“It’s a month from fight night and I’m feeling good. Cruiserweight is the kind of division where you can progress quickly and, at my age, that’s what I need to do.”

Tickets are priced at £30 (general admission) and £60 (VIP Ringside), and can be purchased by calling 0845 111 2900 or directly from any boxer on the bill.

Unbeaten Halesowen super middleweight, Lennox Clarke, tops the bill – sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Walsall – as he looks to secure a Midlands Title shot, at least, later in the year.

Ludlow’s British Challenge Super Welterweight Champion, Craig Morris, Stafford’s former Midlands Area Welterweight Champion, Rob Hunt, Birmingham super welterweight, Jordan Clayton, Tipton super featherweight, Lee Glover,

Coventry welterweight, James ‘The Full Monty’ Montgomery and undefeated West Bromwich trio – super welterweight Luke Heron (Walker), middleweight Tom Stokes, and super featherweight Jack Summers complete the card.

The weigh-in and aftershow (over 18’s only) take place at Grosvenor Casino Walsall, Bentley Mill Way, Walsall WS2 0LE (just off junction 10 of the M6). GC Walsall will have a presence at the Town Hall on the evening and have linked up with taxi firm, Yellow Taxi’s, to supply a number of free taxi’s to take guests from the Town Hall to the casino post-fight.
