This week, former two-time world champion Paul “The Magic Man” Malignaggi, attended the 5th St. GYM to hold an eight-round sparring session with super lightweight contender Amir ‘The Young Master” Imam.
Malignaggi took time out from his training to discuss what his next move could be.
“I want to see how good I can look to see if I’m doing this again,” said Malignaggi. “It’s great to be here in the gym, but I need to know how my body reacts to a long training camp. I have been doing this about 15 years now and I need to know that my passion for boxing is still in my heart.
“For now, I am training at a less intense level than when I do it for a fight. I’m waiting for confirmation of my next fight and I think to do some rounds with a young fighter like Imam can give me an idea of where I am – physically.”
“I think to do less physical and more intelligent fights is something I can still do for some time, but my body is no longer the same as when I started in professional boxing. Back then, there was a fire and desire to achieve goals. Now it’s different, I have reached some goals and I have less intensity, not only for boxing but for all aspects of my life.
“I’ll think I’ll be back soon, maybe in Europe for a regional (European) title as that motivates me to continue. In my last few fights in England and Italy, I felt really good and I think I still have gas in the tank to go through other battles before leaving boxing.
“Soon you will hear about my next fights,” he added.
