Birmingham middleweight, Jordan Clayton, is buzzing to get back in the ring next month, writes James Eley.
The 22-year-old appears on Black Country Boxing’s ‘Summer Scorcher’ at Walsall Town Hall and, with fight night less than a month away, is pleased with his preparation so far which has included some world class sparring sessions.
“Training has been going really well,” he told www.uko-boxing.com. “Before the camp I recently had a child so I am getting back into it now but it is going good and I am getting the weight down and training hard. I have been sparring too. I have had a few good sessions. I have sparred Frankie Gavin and I went down to Bristol and sparred Danny Butler as well as Jack Catterall, so it has been great to get the rounds in.
“Now I am a professional, you have to train hard and have a good attitude because it is a completely different sport to the amateur game.”
The middleweight admits it is tough juggling full time work with his boxing commitments but he is determined to succeed in the sport and make it a hat-trick of professional victories in the paid code in Walsall on Saturday, 9th July.
“I work full time for TDR Civil Engineering so I have to get up at 4.30am to go for my run and then I have to be at work for 6am,” he explained. “When I finish work I do sessions with my trainer in the gym so I don’t get back from there until after 9pm. It is difficult to manage my time. It does feel like I don’t have a life at times because it is hard to balance work and training and I have three kids as well. Hopefully it all pays off in the end and I will work as hard as I can to make that happen.
“I look at my career in steps and a win in this fight will just be another step up the ladder. I want to keep getting the wins under my belt and hopefully compete for titles at some stage. I want to keep doing what I am doing and take it from there. I am only 22 so I still have plenty of time.”
