Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn is hoping to stage a massive two-belt welterweight clash between Kell Brook and Jessie Vargas at Sheffield United’s Brammall Lane stadium.

Brook, who holds the IBF version, has been on the lookout for a massive fight since missing out on an all-UK battle with long-term rival Amir Khan and WBO champion Vargas fits the bit perfectly.

Talks have been ongoing for a period of time between Hearn and Vargas handler Cameron Dunkin, with a date in late August or early September pencilled in for what will be Brook’s first test since an August 2014 win over Shawn Porter.

“It’s a huge fight for Brook and I couldn’t be happier that he is finally going to get the chance to cement his legacy as the number one fighter in the division,” Hearn told The Daily Mail.

“This is just the beginning. Kell is going to go though Vargas and all the belt holders but it all begins at Bramall Lane where we plan to stage this fight,” he added.

Las Vegas-based Vargas defeated previously undefeated Sadam ‘World Kid’ Ali to claim his second weight world title following a reign as unified 140 pound ruler with the WBA and IBO in 2014.

One solitary loss to seasoned contender Timothy Bradley in 28 bouts is proof enough of the credentials Vargas boasts, although taking on Brook in his own backyard will see the 27 year-old start as a firm underdog.

Dates will have to be worked out with Sheffield United as the Football League season will be underway by the time the fight takes place, with the 2016/17 fixture list for ‘The Blades’ set to be released in the coming weeks.
