Merseyside’s only world champion, Liam Smith will battle Montenegrin Pedrag Radosevic in the second defence of his WBO super welterweight title next month.
The 27 year-old named the little-known former middleweight operator at a press conference in his hometown of Liverpool on Monday ahead of a headlining appearance at the Echo Arena on June 4.
Smith defeated John Thompson to claim the belt in October 2015 and went on to defend the title against Jimmy Kelly away from home just two months later.
‘Beefy’ had been linked to fights with Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, Willie Nelson and stablemate Gary Corcoran, but in the end, has settled for what Smith called ‘a step up from Kelly’ against WBO-number eleven ranked Radosevic in just under four weeks time.
Radosevic, 31, campaigned at the middleweight limit for ten years from 2004 until 2014 and was stopped in four rounds by multi-time world champion Felix Sturm at 160 pounds in his only loss from 31 starts.
The summer bill includes European title fights for talented Scousers Ryan Farrag and Jazza Dickens, plus Paul Butler battling Petchbarngborn Kokietgym for a fringe version of the WBO super flyweight title.
Zolani Tete and possible future Smith opponent Liam Williams also feature.
