Dave Coldwell was a gleeful figure last weekend as his bantamweight charge, Jamie McDonnell, recorded a resounding win over Mexican import, Fernando Vargas.
McDonnell was in excellent form as he made light work of his his opponent and he now has his focus fully switched on bigger names. Coldwell was delighted that his man performed to his own level and didn’t drop his standards despite the late change of foe and he now fully believs that’s McDonnell is ready for anyone at bantam or even the weight above.
“He’s ready for anyone. In fact, I’d go as far as saying he beats everyone too. There’s a ton of opportunity for him in and around his weight class and when I think how Jamie compares to them then I’m confident that he comes out on top. Shinsuke Yamanaka and Juan Carlos Payano are obviously the two standout names at bantamweight and both are quality but Jamie is in the form of his life and he’s getting better every single fight. There’s chances for him north against people like Scott Quigg and that’s a massive domestic fight that I’d love to happen sooner rather than later.”
Coldwell added, “The position Jamie is in now is one that really needs to be capitalised on as he’s coming into his prime now and he needs the fights that are really going to bring the best out of him. you’re looking at one of the most improved fighters in British boxing and the way he has gone about his business in collecting his titles on his way to the top of his division is something that people really need to applaud and appreciate. He’s done things the hard way in this sport which includes picking himself up from early defeats and travelling abroad to fight feared names. It’s incredible that some within the sport aren’t giving him the credit he deserves. I’m certain a massive fight gives him that spotlight.”
