Bellew on the verge of securing Makabu vacant WBC title clash

Bellew has been put forward as an alternative to Grigory Drozd following the injured champion’s failure to following through on a mandatory stipulation to number one contender Makabu on April 8.

The hard-hitting Russian has been made ‘Champion in Recess’ by the World Boxing Council and Bellew is hopeful of confirming his world title shot, possibly for June 4, in the near future.

Despite Bellew being ranked at number six below Olanrewaja Durodola, Marco Huck, Mairis Briedis and Oleksandr Usyk, it seems the pulling power of Hearn has persuaded the WBC to lean towards the Merseysider.

As far as a venue is concerned, Goodison Park in Liverpool – home of Bellew’s beloved Everton FC, is currently the favourite, although Hearn is yet to release details of which options are on the table.

Terms have been agreed with Makabu though and its now full steam ahead for Bellew to turn the fiction of his recent acting debut in Rocky spin-off ‘Creed’ into reality.

‘The Bomber’ played ‘Pretty’ Ricky Conlan in the hit movie opposite star Michael B. Jordan, portraying the current WBC champion defending his belt at the famous football stadium.
