Leon Gower set for second pro bout on March 19

Rookie featherweight Leon Gower has found his calling as a professional fighter after turning over from the amateur code.

The 23-year-old from Burton makes his second paid outing against Sheffield’s Qasim Hussain on Black Country Boxing’s ‘Cool Hand & The Gang show, sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Walsall, at Walsall Town Hall on 19th March.

Having turned over in December, Gower admits he is loving the change in style.

“I’m enjoying the difference between amateur and professional boxing,” he told uko-boxing.com “I always felt I was cut out to be a pro because it suits my style a lot. In my debut in December (a points win over Joe Beeden) it was really good, not having to come in and out of range like in amateur boxing, but being able to stay up close, roll and step rather than coming out of range.”

The 23 year-old is happy to train and fight ‘away’ from home in Walsall as he returns to the scene of his debut – but dreams of headlining in his native Burton further down the line.

“There was a fantastic atmosphere for my debut and Walsall Town Hall is an absolutely cracking venue,” he said. “I sold a lot of tickets and have done the same this time, which I think is good considering it’s a fair way from Burton. It’s not a bad following to start with and hopefully it keeps growing.

“The ideal scenario would be getting Errol (Johnson – manager) to put on shows in Burton. That would be really good, to have a home show up there – and it would be a big crowd.”

Gower’s second professional fight features on a bill also starring the likes of Jason Welborn, Lennox Clarke, Martin Gethin and Luke Paddock.

Tickets are priced at £30 (general admission) and £60 (VIP Ringside), and can be purchased by calling 0845 111 2900 or directly from any boxer on the bill.

The weigh-in and aftershow take place at Grosvenor Casino Walsall, Bentley Mill Way, Walsall WS2 0LE (just off junction 10 of the M6). GC Walsall will have a presence at the Town Hall on the evening and have linked up with local taxi firm, Yellow Taxi’s, to supply a number of free taxi’s to take guests from the Town Hall to the casino post-fight.
