Former world champion and all-round boxing superstar, ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley is on the verge of securing another title shot, WBN have been informed.
The 44 year-old had been linked to a possible rematch with returning rival Antonio Margarito this week, although the American is focused on facing one of the current belt holders and could even announce his opportunity in the coming days.
Mosley originally stopped Margarito in the ninth round back in 2009 amidst a controversial loaded glove scandal, which resulted in the Mexican being banned from boxing for a year and branded a cheat. Margarito retired two years later following defeat to Miguel Cotto before scheduling a comeback for March 3 against Jorge Paez following clearance from doctors over his suspect right eye.
Should ‘Tony’ come through against Paez in Mexico City, Mosley stated a second meeting would only be possible be if a huge offer was made by Margarito’s promoters, Zanfer Boxing.
“Despite stories over a rematch with Margarito, I can say nothing has ever come up about it,” Mosley exclusively told World Boxing News.
“The only way I would fight a Margarito again is if there was a ton of money in it. Otherwise, it doesn’t make any sense for me.”
Asked what he makes of Margarito launching a comeback after five years, Mosley added: “I think he will probably shock some people. He was a great fighter until I ruined his career by knocking his bitch ass out. But that was only after Nazeem (Richardson, former trainer) caught him riding dirty (with illegal hand wraps).
“I can understand why he would want a rematch with me as the dude probably hates me. He must have nightmares of me knocking him out every night,” he joked.
On what could be next on the back of his December stoppage win over Patrick Lopez, Mosley was clearly exciting about a potential world championship chance, which would represent his first since a 2012 defeat to Canelo Alvarez.
“I’m currently in talks to fight in April for a world title and that fight looks very solid,” explained Mosley.
“I have something to prove to the fans and show them that I’m back like Sugar Ray Leonard was. That I can take on and beat the best.
“It has been hard getting good guys to fight me since I was retired, but now I have two wins under my belt and I have the WBA international belt at 147, which also comes with a number rating in the world.
“I guess you could say I’m getting a lot more calls, but without saying too much, we could make the announcement next week.”
