Less than a week away from one of the most anticipated clashes in British boxing’s lower weight divisions and it seems to be toss up between super bantamweights Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg.
The Sky Sports Box Office blockbuster, scheduled for February 27 at Manchester Arena, is a classic battle between a talented puncher and a dedicated fighter who lives and breathes the sport of boxing.
Frampton, 29, has gathered an unblemished 21-0 record with 14 knockouts and has already made his mark in the United States as the IBF champion at 122 pounds. Quigg, on the other hand – who is two years younger, has one bona-fide draw on his 33-fight C.V and is widely regarded as a slight underdog with bookmakers.
In a pick-em contest, it’s a choice between Frampton, the natural fighter with a devastating finish, or Quigg – the boxing fanatic who spends every waking minute with pugilism running through his veins.
Yes, Quigg lives and breathes boxing, but that’s not where it ends, as the Bury man holds a victory over Kiko Martinez that may slightly contradict the odds for this week’s battle. Quigg took Martinez out in two rounds last July, whilst Frampton took nine and twelve sessions to beat the Spaniard in separate 2013 and 2014 encounters.
Whether too much can be read into that fact is down to those debating, although Frampton was put down twice in his last contest by Alejandro Gonzales on his Premier Boxing Champions debut last summer. ‘The Jackal’ holds the more fearsome reputation, and in all honesty, hasn’t looked likely to lose any of his bouts despite those setbacks, whilst Quigg was pushed to to a draws against Yoandris Salinas and stopped Rendall Munroe in a return following a three-round draw stopped on a cut.
Whichever way you dissect it, Frampton v Quigg really is a coin toss of a fight, and both have their pros and cons – plus the added bonus of each bringing a world title belt which makes for a truly enticing fight.
Do you opt for the ruggedness of Frampton or the dedication of Quigg? It really is a fifty-fifty offering which will finally be settled in a few days’ time in a unification fight that will surely live up to all expectations and deliver on each and every level.
