Sky Sports Boxing’s ‘My Greatest Night’ documentary series returns on Sunday night. In this episode George Groves looks back at his bitter grudge match with London rival James Degale back in May 2011.
GROVES ON THE BRITISH TITLE ‘It was only for the British title, even though the British title is a great title, the magnitude of the fight made it seem like something bigger. The comforting part of the build-up was I knew James. I was fighting somebody that I knew, it wasn’t a stranger. I knew how he trained, I knew his strengths and his weaknesses. I could articulate them to him a little bit better then he could to me. I really got under his skin.’
GROVES ON THE MENTAL BATTLE ‘I tried to have no emotion towards him at all in the preparation for that fight. I didn’t want to like him, I didn’t want to dislike him. I thought if I ‘nothing’ him, that’s the best way to deal with this.’
GROVES ON THE VICTORY ‘I’d been like a robot in the build-up to that fight. Not just in the gym, but outside the gym to my family, to my friends. I hadn’t expressed any emotion. It was the first time a fight effected not just me, but also my family because everyone else knew who I was boxing. I was just as happy for myself as I was for my friends and family who had stood by me in the build-up to that fight, when it seemed like everyone else was writing me off. It was like ‘Thank you, justice’ like we had been sitting through a long court case. In my boxing career its definitely my greatest night’
