EBU News: Hearn secures Smith v Mohoumadi; Satchell out of Masson clash; Maccarinelli mandatory

Callum Smith will challenge Hadillah Mohoumadi for the European super middleweight title after promoter Eddie Hearn captured the rights to stage the contest in the UK.

Smith, who is undefeated in 18 fights, annihilated fellow-Liverpudlian Rocky Fielding at the Echo Arena in November to prove his dominance at domestic level and now makes the next logical step up the ladder.

A date and venue will be announced in due course by Matchroom Boxing as Smith continues his progress to what seems to be an inevitable and eventual shot at one of the current world title holders.

Future opponent and EBU champion, Mohoumadi, 35, is on a hot streak himself of five straight knockouts as the former French belt holder enjoys a six-fight winning run since losing to IBF ruler James DeGale in 2012.

At flyweight, a rumoured clash between EBU title holder Thomas Masson and Kevin Satchell has fallen apart. Masson’s promoters won the bid to hold the contest in France on March 5, although Satchell has been pulled from the bout in favour of fighting on the Terry Flanagan v Derry Matthews world title card on February 13.

A former European champion, unbeaten Satchell will put a disappointing 2015 behind him in an eight-rounder in his home city of Liverpool.

In the light-heavyweight ranks, Enzo Maccarinelli has been pushed as mandatory challenger to champion Igor Mikhalkin despite recently fighting at the cruiserweight limit.

The Welshman defeated ex-pound for pound king Roy Jones Jr via a devastating knockout in Russia last December, so may want to focus on continuing his progress at the higher limit rather than dropping back down.

Meanwhile, light-middleweight champion Michel Soro will defend his belt against Matteo Signani in France on March 19, whilst super-featherweight title holder Jules Giner meets Guillaume Frenois that same month in Barcelona.

A fight between Jazza Dickens and former world champion Kiko Martinez heads to purse bids a week on Monday for the super-bantamweight belt.
