EBU orders Nieto v Daws rematch, purse bids January 18

The Londoner was robbed of his chance to claim the blue belt at the second attempt when disqualified by referee Freddy Rafn on home soil earlier this month, for what looked to have been a completely accidental head clash in the tenth round.

At the time, Daws was ahead of all three judges scorecards and would have been crowned champion if the correct decision was made by the Danish official. Nieto was subsequently handed the title as a result of Rafn’s failing but has now been ordered to make a first defence against Daws once the purse bid is settled.

Daws, 36, had previously suffered heartbreak against Michele Di Rocco in 2013 when it looked as though the Briton had done enough to seal victory in Italy, but now gets a third and possibly final attempt to pick up the Continental championship.

The UK remains the favourite destination to pick up the return fight as Nieto aims to cling on the title he won in such controversial circumstances at Westcroft Leisure Centre just a few weeks ago.
