Bellew v Masternak sanctioned for vacant European title

Tony Bellew and Mateusz Masternak will lock horns for the vacant European Boxing Union cruiserweight championship when the pair collide on Saturday night in London.

Former British and Commonwealth light heavyweight champion Bellew has never fought for an EBU belt during his career, whilst Masternak held the title briefly in 2012 and then lost another challenge against Grigory Drozd a year later.

Bilal Laggoune and Dmytro Kucher battled to a draw for the vacant strap back in October, and although there were calls for a rematch, promoter Eddie Hearn managed to secure the belt for Bellew v Masternak on his pay-per-view show.

Intimidating heavyweight Anthony Joshua tops the bill in defence of his Commonwealth title against rival Dillian Whyte, whilst Kevin Mitchell and Ismael Barroso will contest the vacant interim WBA lightweight championship in the co-feature. The winner of the 135lb encounter will then go on to challenge new champion Anthony Crolla in 2016 after Derry Mathews vacated the belt in favour of facing WBO title holder and stablemate Terry Flanagan in February.

Rounding off the main portion of the O2 event this weekend will be twelve round contests involving Luke Campbell versus Yvan Mendy, Chris Eubank Jr fighting Gary O’Sullivan in a WBA middleweight title eliminator and a European welterweight championship defence for Italian veteran Gianluca Branco against countryman Paulie Malignaggi.

There are also places on the bill for Josh Warrington who opposes Jorge Sanchez, whilst Martin J Ward, light heavyweight Jake Ball, Reece Bellotti and Ted Cheeseman are all pencilled in for the Sky Sports Box Office extravaganza.
