Hobson takes Sheedy Commonwealth route

After losing an extremely contentious split-decision verdict to English light-middleweight champ Nav Mansouri in July, ‘Speedy’ Sam Sheedy gets the chance to move on when he faces Frank Dodze in a Commonwealth title eliminator at the Rotherham Magna Centre on November 21.

With the winner in the frame to face current champ Liam Williams; the stakes are high, but promoter Dennis Hobson believes Sam will rise to the challenge and put his sole career defeat to Mansouri behind him.

Dodze may have lost eight of 26 bouts, but is a menacing hitter. The Ghanaian has knocked out 16 opponents and is confident of adding Sheedy to his list of victims. Aware of the threat, Hobson is predicting an exciting encounter but says Sheffield’s Sheedy has the potential to be a hit on the world scene.

“We’re looking at the Commonwealth route obviously, and the British [title], but Sam’s style will be very attractive on the international scene and I think he’ll upset a lot of world class fighters. We need to help him get hold of a meaningful belt to fulfill his potential; he got beat in the Mansouri fight on paper, but we’re now leapfrogging Nav because we’re in this Commonwealth eliminator. So it’s all about guiding people right, and that’s what we intend to do with Sam because we believe in him.

“We think this is the best route to go, against Dodze on the 21st, and then hopefully the Commonwealth title against Liam Williams. That would be a cracking fight but we need to get this one out of the way first, and then I think Sam will eventually light up the light-middleweight division. Dodze is dangerous, he’s elusive but can punch, so it’s another great fight on this bill.”

Dennis Hobson Promotions presents Sam Sheedy versus Frank Dodze in a Commonwealth light-middleweight title eliminator at the Rotherham Magna Centre on November 21. Co-headlining will be Sheffield’s Muheeb Fazeldin taking on South Africa’s Klaas Mboyane for the vacant Commonwealth bantamweight title, and Dronfield’s Lewis Taylor defending his English middleweight belt against Sheffield’s Jez Wilson.
