If their last promotion was a portent of things to come, December’s “Christmas Cracker” tournament at Emperors Palace should be a blast.
Golden Gloves and African Ring put together “Prospects at the Palace”, a big-punching, high-action event that showcased the best of SA boxing’s young talent.
In a little over a month, three of the boxers who shone will again strut their stuff at the casino venue in another joint promotion. They include DeeJay Kriel, Brandon Thysse and Joshua Studdard.
Kriel generates excitement whenever he boxes on account of his non-stop style. Thysse looked all class in his pro debut and Studdard produced a very accomplished display. He’s a bit of a banger, but will be up against crafty Edward Disolwane, who gave Kriel a good argument on the same show.
Two other prospects will join the mix: Dair Zhailauov, brother of Roman, is said to be more a boxer-puncher who will make his SA debut at junior-welterweight, and Cowin Ray, the son of former heavyweight Basil, will fight a junior-middleweight four-rounder.
“I’ve seen all these kids fight,” said co-promoter Jeff Ellis. “I’m very encouraged, because they are the guys who will be carrying the flag in future. Fans will see for themselves.”
The bill is topped by the WBA Pan-African welterweight title fight between Paul Kamanga and Zhailauov. There’s a cracking chief undercard fight with ex-stablemates Warren Joubert and Jason Bedeman battling it out over eight rounds.
The tournament will not be broadcast and fans are advised to contact Jeff Ellis at firstname.lastname@example.org with regard to tickets.
