Exclusive: Ogogo reflects on his Strictly Come Dancing experience

From splitting his pants in the very first live episode to being the second celebrity voted off the series, the Olympic bronze medallist certainly caught the eye alongside professional dance partner Oti Mabuse.

Ogogo, 26, is now back to the daily grind of his day job in the gym, something he kept ticking over whilst training for Strictly and carefully nursing a shoulder injury, that will keep him out of action until at least 2016.

Now that the dust has settled on his brief time on the Saturday night British institution, Ogogo reflected in an interview with WBN on his time gracing the dancefloor instead of the boxing ring.

“It was a great experience and I really had a lot of fun,” Ogogo told World Boxing News.

“I did Strictly this year for a couple of great reasons. One, I’d just dislocated my shoulder in my last fight and I was unable to fight, train or even move it whilst I was recovering from the operation I had. And two, It was the perfect thing to do to raise my profile to the mainstream British public whilst I couldn’t fight.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’d have swapped it all to be in the ring fighting towards domestic titles and working my way up the world rankings, but because I was unable to, raising my profile by starring on the biggest TV show in the country was the next best thing. It certainly beat sitting on my sofa, sulking about being unable to fight, which I would have been doing otherwise.

“I feel proud that the BBC felt I was a big enough name to do it so early into my pro career and it was nice for boxing/a boxer to get some mainstream coverage as us boxers seem to be ignored too often.”

Ogogo revealed that he is set to return to the show for the series finale just before Christmas, whilst the 26 year-old also gave WBN his view on who could make it to the show’s climax.

“I’m going to go back for the final week, so it’ll be great to catch up with the guys as we all get on so well. They are a lovely bunch of people from all different walks of life, guys that I’d have never met otherwise. So I thank the show for allowing me to meet and become friends with such a cool group of people.

“I’d love to see Anita and Katie make the final three as neither of them have had much dance experience in their lives prior to Strictly and I’m so proud of them for how well they’re doing.

“Also, Peter Andre is such a nice guy. I’ve never met someone who has so much time for everyone her meets. He’s a legend!”

With a record currently standing at 8-0 as a pro, Ogogo intends to make up for lost time once fully fit and with a new fight date secured.

Catch Part Two of WBN’s exclusive Anthony Ogogo interview early next week.
