Exclusive: O’Sullivan eyes KO, labels Eubank Jr ‘nothing special’

The two middleweights have generated a lot of interest for their winter bout, with many people still unsure as to whether Eubank Jr can truly emulate his father’s achievements. The Eubank’s have a bitter history when it comes to Irish fighters, as it was Ireland’s Steve Collins who ended Eubank Sr’s unbeaten run as world champion back in 1995.

Now, O’Sullivan (22-1, 15 KO) is relishing the opportunity to come to London and show the fans that Eubank Jr is little more than a name and is not what he’s cracked up to be.

“I’m really delighted that the fight has been made official now. Chris Eubank Jr isn’t a bad fighter, but he certainly isn’t anything special. He’s very lucky to be in the position he is in and if he had a regular name, he wouldn’t be anywhere near this level. There are some much harder fights out there for me,” O’Sullivan told World Boxing News.

“He comes across as arrogant and is just a media hype job. I had to work my way up and do things the hard way, he’s had it handed to him on a plate. Even in his last fight, the opponent was terrible.

“I’m very confident about knocking him out and would advise all my fans to put a bet on it and have a happy Christmas with the winnings. It’s my destiny to be middleweight world champion and Eubank Jr is just another stone on the road,” he added.

The fight – which is an eliminator for the WBA regular world title – will take place at London’s O2 arena, as part of a stacked undercard to Anthony Joshua’s heavyweight clash with Dillian Whyte.

O’Sullivan said: “I’m excited about fighting in London again. The O2 arena has been a good hunting ground for me – my first fight in Britain was there and the fans always get behind me.

“The Eubank fight has really caught the attention in Ireland and it’s going to be a massive night. Even Andy Lee complained recently about the amount of coverage it was getting compared to his world title fight.

“It’s an added incentive that it’s an eliminator for the WBA belt and I’m happy to fight either Peter Quillin or Daniel Jacobs. I’m personally hoping Quillin wins because I’ve always chased that fight, but first I’ve got to knock out Eubank Jr.”
