It has been confirmed to World Boxing News that Terry Flanagan will no longer make the second defence of his WBO lightweight title on the undercard of the Andy Lee v Billy Joe Saunders blockbuster on December 19 in Manchester.
The 26 year-old was scheduled to build on an impressive victory over Diego Magdaleno at Manchester Arena earlier this month at the same venue just before Christmas, although will not feature as previously planned.
WBN has learned that interim WBA champion Derry Mathews has been called up as a replacement and will be involved in the massive year-ending bill.
There had been speculation that Flanagan would face Mathews himself following an admission by ‘Turbo’ to WBN that he’s looking for a massive all-UK fight next, but that will have to wait until 2016 at the earliest.
Mathews joins Queensberry Promotions’ stars Mitchell Smith, Jack Catterall and Tommy Langford on Frank Warren’s ‘Xmas Cracker’ card, with more names to be added to that line-up in the near future.
The headliner sees Ireland’s Lee put his WBO middleweight belt up for grabs in a twice-rescheduled clash with Saunders, a fight that could see the winner land a massive unification with Gennady Golovkin in the second half of next year.
