Mayweather v Pacquiao rematch reports unsubstantiated
Quotes attributed to Manny Pacquiao by a European journalist have led to hysterical reporting about a possible rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
As Pacquiao landed in Doha to catch a glimpse of the AIBA World Championships on Thursday, the Filipino gave selected interviews to reporters about his future.
In one of those exchanges, Pacquiao said rightly that he would fight anybody, which has always been the case, although the writer – who WBN will not name – then took that statement to directly mean Mayweather and ran with it as fact in the title of a subsequent story.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has already moved to rubbish the rumours in the wake of other outlets running with it as Pacquiao lines up one more fight before concentrating on his run for Senator.
Amir Khan, Terence Crawford and Viktor Postol are said to be prime candidates to oppose the ‘Pacman’ in what could potentially be his swansong bout. The contest is set to take place in March or April of 2016 in Las Vegas, but any talk that Mayweather could be in the opposite corner seems to be way off the mark at this point.
‘Money’ hasn’t even been retired for a month since defeating Andre Berto to equal heavyweight Rocky Marciano on 49-0 and as yet has no plans to make a quick comeback to meet the man he beat on points as recently as May.
