Exclusive: Martin Murray shows support for George Groves

Following that defeat in Las Vegas, the Londoner has consequently decided to take some time away from the sport to decide his future and has even recently deleted his Twitter account – perhaps an indication of the emotional strain the defeat caused.

Groves (21-3, 16KO), who recovered to take Swedish-born Jack the distance following a first round knockdown, famously lost to bitter rival Carl Froch in his two previous world title challenges.

Not many will understand the pain and despair that comes with failing to win that elusive prize on three occasions, but fellow British super middleweight contender Martin Murray is one that had a similar fate and has some supportive words for Groves when speaking to WBN this week.

Murray told World Boxing News: “I don’t know how George feels personally so I can’t comment on that, but what I can say is that he shouldn’t be too down on himself.

“He may have lost against Jack on Saturday, but he did great to come back from a first round knockdown and make it a close, competitive fight. There are plenty of positives to take from it.”

Murray himself has failed in three world title challenges. After drawing with Felix Sturm and losing controversially to Sergio Martinez, Murray’s most recent attempt was an eleventh round stoppage defeat to middleweight king Gennady Golovkin.

He said: “I’ve had those three failed world title defeats and it does get you down and make you consider where next to go in your career. But I’ve recently moved up in weight and joined Matchroom boxing and I feel like my career has just begun again – I’m a new fighter.

“George just needs to go and evaluate what is the best move for him from here. There are plenty of fights out there for him, George just needs to make sure his next decision is the right one.”
