Bellew on Jones Jr fight: Idol to Rival? Not without a world title!

In a speculative report, it was printed that Bellew could well be on his to way to a fight with Jones Jr in the near future, although ‘The Bomber’ was none-the-wiser when contacted by WBN on Monday night.

“No one has contacted me and I have no intentions to fight Roy. I idolised the man growing up and would only entertain such a fight if he was a world champion,” Bellew stressed to World Boxing News.

Later, when taking to his social media account, the 32 year-old added: “This is absolute nonsense,” in regards to the story. “No one has contacted me and the last thing I want to do is make an idol a rival.” – Which echoed what Bellew had previously stated.

The 32 year-old is on the verge of fighting for a world title following his victory over Nathan Cleverly in November and is just treading water until a solid offer arrives.

Jones, on the other hand, is currently without a fight in the pipeline following the last minute cancellation of a proposed appearance in Bellew’s hometown on September 12 at the world famous racecourse at Aintree.

The ex-Olympic silver medallist was due to fight local slugger Tony Moran in what was due to be a UK debut for Jones until the American failed to show up on a flight to the city last Saturday.

Promoter Stephen Vaughan is mulling over possible legal action over the collapse of the event, having been forced to seek out another opponent for Moran and in turn switch the card to the Olympia.
