Welshman Lee Selby is set to put his IBF featherweight title on the line for the first time in a baptism of fire against three-weight world champion Fernando Montiel on October 14.
The 28 year-old, who ripped the belt away from previously undefeated Russian Evgeny Gradovich in May, recently signed with Al Haymon in the United States and will now feature on Premier Boxing Champions opposite the experienced Mexican.
Montiel has confirmed the fight to a couple of sources in his home country and on social media over the last few days, although nothing official has been released through Haymon’s company regarding the fight.
Selby v Montiel is set to take place as the co-feature to Devon Alexander’s welterweight return to action following the American’s comprehensive loss to Amir Khan in December of last year.
Alexander will battle Aron Martinez, the fighter who gave ex-world champion Robert Guerrero all he could handle in a closely-fought twelve rounder – which eventually went the way of ‘The Ghost’ at the StubHub Center in Carson, California back in June.
Martinez has lost three out of his last four, whilst Alexander has been on the wrong end of results in two of his previous three bouts, and both know nothing but a victory will do next month.
A venue for the card is still being finalised, although Montiel believes the fight is heading to Pheonix, Arizona.
