Former WBC heavyweight champion Klitschko was appointed on Friday, taking over from Yuriy Lutsenko, who specifically asked congress to confirm ‘Dr. Ironfist’ as the new leader, and subsequently, his successor.
“I suggest that Vitali Volodymyrovych Klitschko becomes the head of the Petro Poroshenko Bloc ‘Solidarity’. This will symbolize complete unity and trust for the modernized party,” Lutsenko told members of Klitschko’s UDAR party in Kyiv.
The 44 year-old has been highly involved in helping his country through some difficult times since retiring from boxing in 2012, where Klitschko enjoyed a long run at the top of the sport.
Klitschko’s younger brother Wladimir still reigns over the top division as a four-belt title holder today as Vitali attempts to help ease the burden on his fellow citizens in their current climate of uncertainty.
In his final fight, Vitali blasted out Manuel Charr in four rounds and was unchallenged since a 2003 loss to undisputed king Lennox Lewis. Vital’s only other defeat was a retirement against Chris Byrd in 2000 that remains the only considerable blot on a stellar career inside the ring.
