Mayweather, 38, has announced plans to leave boxing upon the completion of his upcoming bout with Andre Berto in Las Vegas and will end his career tied with retirement record holder and ex-heavyweight great Rocky Marciano on 49-0.
The ‘Money’ Man has defeated all the top fighters of his generation, including a recent victory over arch-rival Manny Pacquiao on May 2, and Smith believes a rematch between the high-profile pair, which has been speculated about, is so far unwarranted.
“Floyd has nothing else to prove, he’s done everything he wanted to accomplish in the sport of boxing,” Smith told World Boxing News.
“The only thing he could want to do is break Marciano’s record, but I have no clue if he would stick around for that or have any inside information.”
Regarding the possibility of a second Pacquiao fight, after the first one pocketed Mayweather $300 million, Smith added: “Floyd has pretty much said he wouldn’t give Manny a rematch because he felt like he was a sore loser. Now salt water or some BS has healed his shoulder?
“I don’t think another fight is needed, but again I don’t know. One thing for sure is that the triple three in boxing; Manny, Miguel Cotto and Canelo – Floyd has beaten them all and has nothing left to prove in my eyes.
“None of those fights where even close. Cotto was exciting, but he dominated all three of them and that shows the level he’s on.”
A former IBF super welterweight champion himself, Smith continues his march towards a third world title shot on the undercard of Mayweather’s clash with Berto in a bout against Vanes Martirosyan and ‘Sugar Shay’ says it’s an honour to once again share a bill with the pound for pound best.
“It’s a historic card and Floyd’s farewell fight. It’s one for the history books,” said Smith. “It’s a great feeling to be a part of this show. Sad at the same time though as he’s done so much for the sport. It really sucks to see him ride off into the sunset.
“There will never be another Floyd Mayweather and he will go down in history as Ali and Robinson did. There just won’t be another guy who has done it better than him,” he added.
