MGM’s newly signed Gary Sweeney will be making his pro-debut in South Africa on 19th September on the undercard to Hekkie Budler who will defend his WBA and IBO minimum weight titles against Simphiwe Khonco.
Sweeney, the seven-time Irish champion, who is managed by MGM and promoted by South African Golden Gloves is keen to get started in the professional game. He is currently training at MGM Marbella and will team up with a local trainer in South Africa two weeks before the big day.
“I am really looking forward to getting started,” he said “It shouldn’t feel different but it does, I want to show everyone what I can do!”
In other news, the Commonwealth and European gold champion, Michael Conlan will be visiting MGM next weekend.
The younger brother of MGM’s Jamie Conlan is Belfast’s current golden boy after winning the gold medal at the European Championships in Bulgaria last week. He was also awarded the best boxer of the championship.
Conlan is still looking to add World champion and Olympic gold to his triumphs before turning professional but MGM look forward to having him here. He plans to do some training with his brother and will also be attending the sold out professional show ‘Lights out at the Plaza’ to cheer on the MGM boys and support the White Collar show on 29th August.
“Jamie’s told me great things about the gym and the team,” said Michael. “So I’m looking forward to experiencing it for myself.”
