Mayfield: Khan’s chin won’t hold up against Pacquiao, sparring sessions mean he won’t fight me

Mayfield, 34, and Khan were the two fighter’s to miss out when pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather chose to face Andre Berto on September 12, leaving the ‘Hard Hitta’ scouting his next move following the PPV announcement.

The former WBO NABO title holder has been out of the ring since defeating Michael Balasi back in November and told WBN over the phone that a fight with Khan would appeal to him.

“Certainly, we were at Virgil Hunter’s gym and we sparred several times in light of Floyd saying he would fight me,” Mayfield exclusively told World Boxing News.

“There were some bad words exchanged with him, speaking how I wasn’t world class or something, and that is definitely a fight I would entertain to take.

“But with me doing so well in sparring against him I very much doubt that he would take the fight.”

A return is eyed before Christmas by the welterweight contender, who has had his profile raised significantly since the Mayweather saga, and rematches against the only two opponents to defeat him would be high on Mayfield’s wanted list.

“We are looking to be back sometime in October, but we don’t have a particular opponent right now,” he said. “We are looking and I certainly would like a rematch with either Emanuel Taylor or Thomas Dulorme.

“They were both very close decisions and I wasn’t outclassed, battered or bruised in those fights, so they are certainly two fights I would like to redeem.”

As Khan is now linked to a fight with Mayweather’s most recent foe Manny Pacquiao, Mayfield was asked how he sees the outcome of that contest should the two eventually agree a deal in 2016.

“I see Pacquiao v Khan being a fun fight to watch, but we have seen that Khan has certain chin issues and I am not sure how he would hold up against Pacquiao’s power. Pacquiao also has an unorthodox style, so Khan would have to deal with that too,” added Mayfield.
