Chavez Jr out for months following hand surgery

The 29 year-old suffered the injury early on against Marcos Reyes last month, and despite not thinking the injury was too serious, eventually the Mexican was forced to go under the knife.

Chavez was hoping to build on his ten-round win over compatriot Reyes with a high-profile super middleweight bout later this year but now expects to be sidelined until at least the spring of 2016.

The victory represented an upturn in form following a devastating first career stoppage loss at the hands of light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara in April and led to Chavez making the decision to move back down to 168lbs permanently.

A fight with Fonfara was hastily arranged in place of a Las Vegas showdown with Carl Froch as talks broke down between both camps leading to the Briton announcing his retirement a short time later.

Fights against Andre Ward, the winner of Badou Jack v George Groves and current IBF champion James DeGale have all been mentioned for Chavez in the future, although for now the one-time middleweight king needs a period of sustained recovery.
