Chagaev originally defended his title against Oquendo in July 2014 amidst a wave of controversy over the handling of the challenger, prior to and after the contest that took place in Grozny, Russia.
Oquendo lost a split decision on the night, although has since successfully argued that his purse wasn’t paid in full leading to a court in the US awarding the American-based Puerto Rican a second chance.
According to Oquendo’s representative Thomas Tsatas, the fight could now happen in the next two months, with the winner then set to immediately be pitched in against mandatory Lucas ‘Big Daddy’ Browne in early 2016.
“Negotiations between Chagaev and Oquendo are ongoing, but they are going well,” Tsatas exclusively told World Boxing News.
“John Wirt is negotiating with Timur Dugazaev who has been very accommodating and an agreement should be reached this week.
“We have a date of October 17th in mind in Germany and It will be for the WBA ‘regular’ Championship. The winner will fight Lucas Browne thereafter.”
In his latest defence of the belt last month, Chagaev blasted out Francesco Pianeta in just one round in Germany, whilst veteran Oquendo has been out of action since the pair first traded blows some thirteen months ago.
