WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman says he likes the idea of pitting the winners of Lucas Matthysse v Viktor Postol and Humberto Soto v Antonio Orozco together once they share a bill in October.
Matthysse and Postol are set to fight it out for the vacant WBC super lightweight title left behind by Danny Garcia, with Soto and Orozco trading blows in the co-feature at the StubHub Center in Carson, Califorina.
Sulaiman believes it is possible that the bouts can act as semi-finals for an eventual match-up between the couple who have their hands raised in a few weeks’ time.
“I think Lucas Matthysse v Viktor Postol is going to be a formidable fight,” Sulaiman told World Boxing News.
“Matthysse is a champion that has been sidelined after his lost to Garcia. He has come back and fought very difficult fights to earn his shot, so he’s putting everything on the line.
“Postol is one of the hot prospects and he won a final elimination bout. He was scheduled to fight Garcia, but that didn’t happen and now they are going to meet in the ring to determine the new champion.
“If there is a chance the winner of Matthysse v Postol and Humberto Soto v Antonio Orozco meet next then I like that fight and I think that would be a possibility,” he confirmed.
Soto is the only former world champion of the quartet, although has had mixed fortunes since moving into the 140lb category.
