WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has informed WBN That the winner of the interim WBC super bantamweight title fight between Hugo Ruiz and Julio Ceja could become full champion.
As current title holder Leo Santa Cruz is fighting for the WBC Diamond belt at featherweight, it is likely that the Mexican would chose to remain at 126lbs if victorious against Abner Mares on August 29 in California.
Sulaimain says should this be the case, the victor on the Ruiz v Ceja contest, which takes place on the same bill, would then be bumped up to full title holder.
“We ordered Hugo Ruiz v Julio Ceja for the interim championship,” Sulaiman told World Boxing News.
“If Santa Cruz does not come down to super bantamweight after fighting for the WBC Diamond featherweight title then the winner of Ruiz v Ceja will be declared full champion.
“Obviously if Santa Cruz comes back down then they will fight and he then defends his super bantamweight title.”
Gary Russell Jr is currently in possession of the green belt at 126, although any clash with the winner of Santa Cruz v Mares seems some way off due to the American’s voluntary and mandatory obligations.
“In regards to the winner of Santa Cruz v Mares staying at featherweight, Gary Russell has a voluntary lined up after Robinson Castellanos agreed a step aside deal. So, we are waiting for Russell to do his voluntary defence and then proceed with his mandatory defense,” explained Sulaiman.
