Sulaiman happy with Mayweather’s choice of Berto

Berto, 31, was chosen ahead of Amir Khan and Karim Mayfield for the MGM Grand pay-per-view offering next month, and despite criticism of Mayweather’s decision, Suliaman says the Haitian-American deserves it for his accomplishments in and out of the ring.

“I am happy. Andre Berto is a very good fighter,” Sulaiman told World Boxing News.

“Berto is a former champion and a formidable person. He has been in WBC Conventions before and you see him interact with the kids and the fans, it’s unbelievable.

“I also think it’s going to be a good fight as Berto is a top fighter. The fight with Victor Ortiz was so dramatic and Berto could have boxed, but he decided to go all out and make it a brawl. He is very interesting fighter.”

Mayweather is hoping to seal a record-equalling 49th victory against Berto and is already an overwhelming favourite with the oddsmakers who see the Showtime fight as completely one-sided.

Should Mayweather do the expected in Las Vegas, the pound for pound king would then be level with the great Rocky Marciano on 49-0, although when picking his top five fighters of all time recently, ‘The Brockton Blockbuster’ didn’t even make the list.

‘Money’ predictably placed himself at number one of all-time.
