It’s the “Uncivil War” and it’s coming to Emperors Palace on September 19.
Headlined by Hekkie Budler’s WBA and IBO title defence against rugged Simphiwe Khonco, the championship tournament will be announced in early August.
Insiders are already speaking excitedly of another compelling local fight said to be on the card, although promoter Rodney Berman wouldn’t indulge any meaty details. “Let’s just say it’s a fight many fans have been clamouring for.”
Berman did confirm that Irish sensation Gary Sweeney would make his pro debut on the show and will be immediately pitched into a six-rounder on account of his wealth of amateur experience.
“Gary isn’t going to hang around boxing four-rounders,” said the promoter. “If his fight form matches his gym form, which I hear is terrific, he could light up the cruiserweight division.”
Berman also warned Budler not to look past Khonco saying that videos of the youngster showed a fighter with fast hands and a better than average punch. “This will be the moment of his life. He will put it all on the line against Hekkie, which is why I expect it will be a fantastic fight.”
