As exclusively revealed to WBN at the beginning of July in an interview with WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, the featherweight clash between Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares will have the WBC Diamond belt on the line.

The World Boxing Council moved to confirm the news this week as the two Mexican’s prepare to go head-to-head for a potential shot at Gary Russell Jr.

In making the announcement official, Sulaiman stated:

“The WBC Board of Governors has voted in favor of approving the highly prestigious WBC Diamond belt to the extraordinary fight between Abner Mares and Leo Santa Cruz, which will take place in Los Angeles California, on August 29.

“Leo Santa Cruz, world champion in two divisions and current WBC superbantamweight champion will fight Abner Mares, world champion in three divisions and will finally met after years of anticipation for this great fight.

“The WBC is honored to be part of this great event and we wish both of them the best of luck.”

Should Santa Cruz win, a decision would have to made clear to the WBC on whether the current WBC super bantamweight champion would then vacate his title.
