The UK heavyweight battle between Anthony Joshua and Gary Cornish is already selling well for September 12 as the pair contest the vacant Commonwealth title at the O2 Arena in London.
Joshua, 25, is matched with fellow undefeated puncher Cornish in his first major title bout following a highly successful transition from a medal-laden spell in the amateurs. ‘AJ’ followed up a silver at the world championships in 2011 with a memorable gold at the London 2012 Olympics before signing up with Matchroom Boxing and Eddie Hearn in 2013.
Since then, Joshua has gone from strength to strength in knocking out all thirteen of his opponents in the pro ranks within three rounds and finally gets let off the leash against the 28 year-old Scot following his impressive stoppage of Kevin Johnson.
Tough American Johnson has never been halted throughout his career, even after facing the likes of Vitali Klitschko and Tyson Fury, before running into Joshua and being blasted out in just two rounds. Those kind of performances are why Cornish is a huge underdog to derail the Watford man’s charge to the top as ‘The Highlander’ attempts to defend his own 21-0 record.
